Abstract:
The full utilization of a small site on the shore of Lake Erie, coupled with the imaginative use of concrete and technology, produced a dramatic post-tensioned concrete structure for the display and performance of dolphins and sea lions. The concrete stadium-type structure, constructed for Cedar Point amusement park, Sandusky, Ohio, was the major new attraction of the 1980 season. Many complex problems were encountered during the course of this project, from the forming and post-tensioning of the 44 ft (13.4 m) high concrete frame with its 51 ft (15.5 m) cantilever arm, to the casting of the 50 ft (15.2 m) diameter above ground concrete performing tank. The advantages of post-tensioned concrete construction were fully realized in the $3 million structure which required over 5000 cu yd (3823 m3) of cast-in-place concrete and 90 precast double T-sections.
