Abstract:
The development of concrete ties in the construction of railroad lines progressed at a rapid rate after World War II, primarily in the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Russia, and Japan, Many railroad lines had been destroyed in these countries and a shortage . of wood, plus an expanding economy, made the selection of an alternative material imperative. Other countries soon followed suit, Today, concrete railroad ties are utilized in the United States, Canada, Australia, all of the Western European countries, Russia, Japan, India, South Africa, and many other countries. This overview describes the history and recent developments of concrete railroad ties in North America, including design, fabrication, and installation.
