Abstract:
The ready-mixed concrete producer is increasingly confronted with the challenge of including pozzolans, and specifically fly ash, in marketing and production. This paper outlines the principal costs and benefits which must be considered by the producer contemplating the inclusion of fly ash as part of the product offering. Preceding any financial analysis of the costs and benefits to the producer offering fly ash, ttie risks associated with long term availability of quality fly ash must be acceptable. Subsequent to the evaluation of costs and benefits, both tangible and intangible, the producer is then confronted with the necessity to develop a mix proportion catalogue incorporating fly ash, which tailors the properties of the concrete more specifically to the requirements of the contractor, engineer, and owner. The producer will discover that fly ash potzolans will indeed provide greater flexibility to meet specialized requirements for significant end markets. As the producer discovers the relationships that exist between normal concrete constituent materials and the available fly ash, the product offering can be broadened into very high strength concrete and into markets of controlled density fills.
