Abstract:
Because of the very nature of concrete, it is essential that structures be subjected to systematic maintenance. In addition, the durability of concrete requires careful attention to the selection of the appropriate mixture, an up-to-date knowledge of available cementitious materials, proper execution of all concreting operations, and good design, not only from the point of view of strength, but also with respect to exposure to local conditions and the microclimate. Truly durable concrete in the 21st century will necessitate close attention to these details.
