Abstract:
The St. Paul Companies, an insurance firm, asked their architects to add 450,000 ft 2 of offices and parking for 800 cars to an existing headquarters in St. Paul, Minnesota. The architects answered with a cluster of buildings rather than one large structure apt to overwhelm its surroundings. Today, the headquarters consists of an entry pavilion in gothic proportions, an 18-story tower with a cylindrical section, a nine-story "bar" building, a round employee cafeteria, and a partially below-grade parking structure.
