Abstract:
The paper gives answers to some of the problems of cold weather concreting. The effect of the water-cement ratio on the critical freezing age has been discussed, as well as the minimum protection required to prevent frost damage to concrete. The safe temperature differentials between the concrete and the ambient to avoid cracks due to thermal shock under varying degrees of restraint has been derived. The required amount of insulation is shown for various weather conditions to maintain the temperature of the concrete above 50 F (10 C) for 3 days. Assuming that the stipulated insulation is attached to the formwork, the safe stripping times to avoid thermal cracks are given for various thicknesses of structures under various degrees of restraint.
