Abstract:
The 1997 Uniform Building Code was recently published. The seismic provisions of the new code incorporate a number of important lessons learned from earthquakes and recent advances from other sources. Although it intends to provide parity with current requirements, significant changes have been made which reflect near field effects and redundancy of lateral load resisting systems. This paper discusses the implications of these changes, specifically for the seismic zone 4 regions. A cost study on the impact of the new provisions for a reinforced concrete special moment-resisting frame structure is included.
