Abstract:
The connection of new construction to that existing is often required in the rehabilitation of structures. Connection methods that can minimize connection hardware between the new and existing elements can provide an economic advantage as well as reduce overall construction time and inconvenience. Four specimens that incorporate the use of a steel pipe to provide shear transfer between concrete elements were tested. The tests were conducted to evaluate the connection of precast concrete wall panels to an existing concrete structure and to determine minimum details for satisfactory connection performance. The specimens were tested by applying cyclic shear across the connection interface. The test results were analyzed, and a rationale for design was developed. Design and detailing recommendations for this connection technique are presented.
