Abstract:
Concrete is used for durability and increased facility life of marine structures. Forming and labor of deck systems above water are a major part of marine construction cost. This article reviews some special details and compares the cost of cast-in-place deck system to a composite deck system using information from a project which had both types of decks on the same project. Construction techniques used were developed from working with different contractors on several projects to develop a deck system that reduced the construction cost through labor savings and at the same time provided the structural integrity required for a marine structure. The most recent project consists of the construction of a new Container Dock to accommodate the berthing of Post Panamax Class Container vessels incorporating features to handle mega-containerships in the future.
