Abstract:
To restore a thirty-plus-year-old seawall a multifaceted engineering program was initiated. The program consisted of extensive structural analysis, nondestructive impact-echo testing and design of a cathodic protection system. Utilization of the results of nondestructive testing significantly reduced the cost of the proposed repairs. It is believed that the proposed repairs will extend the life of the seawall by at least thirty years. This case study illustrates how the integration of a newly developed nondestructive testing technology into a comprehensive evaluation program can have a significant cost advantage in sustaining our nation’s aging infrastructure.
