Abstract:
Design criteria for torsion in reinforced concrete members have been developed by ACI Committee 438, Torsion. These provisions are being considered for incorporation into the 1970 ACI Building Code. This paper gives the background of the torsion criteria. It reviews the basic strength equations for plain, reinforced, and restressed concrete subjected to pure torsion. The interaction of torsion with shear and bending is also discussed. The application of the torsion design provisions are illustrated by an example problem.
