Abstract:
There exists no standard for water to be used as mixing water. The existing information is very limited, except for the time of setting and compressive strength of mortar or concrete made with an unknown water. Moreover, most of the information is very old. Such advice as exists is reviewed and criteria for the acceptance of water are discussed. The use of wash water and of treated domestic waste water are considered. The distinction between water suitable for mixing and for curing is pointed out. Finally, recommendations for comprehensive research on the criteria of acceptability of water for use in concrete are made.
