Abstract:
Elastic properties of mass concrete were determined in tests on small unreinforced beams cast from mass mixes, made with and without ponolan replacement of portland cement. The magnitude of stress-strain values, obtained near test failure, has design significance with regard to volume change induced in massive structures by temperature and other causes at locations of high restraint. Information obtained in this investfgation was used to establish some of the temperature and construction control procedures for mass concrete in Dworshak Dam, near Orofino, Idaho. Methods used are also applicable to other types of massive concrete structures.
