Abstract:
New York State introduced a new concrete mixture in 1996, designated Class HP, with reduced water-cement ratio and two pozzolanic substitutions for a portion of the portland cement. Class HP has a lower permeability and greater resistance to cracking than previous concrete mixtures used for bridge decks. Field-inspection results indicate that, since the introduction of Class HP concrete, performance of bridge decks has been improved. Nearly half of the Class HP decks inspected exhibited no cracking at all and 80% were reported to perform as well or better than decks built with previously specified concrete.
