Abstract:
This article presents the results of an experimental program to investigate the feasibility of strengthening circular concrete columns with unidirectional carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) sheets in cold climates. Thirteen plain concrete circular columns (6 in. diameter x 12 in. high [152 x 305 mm]) were tested. Nine columns were subjected to 50 freeze-thaw cycles while the remaining four columns were kept at room temperature. The columns were tested for axial strength, and plots were obtained for load versus axial strain. The circumferential strain the FRP material was also recorded to monitor the degree of confinement provided by the sheets. Based on the initial test results, the CFRP sheets proved to be feasible in strengthening compression members in cold climates.
