Abstract:
An upper-bound analysis for reinforced concrete deep beams with fixed- end supports is presented. Modified Coulomb failure criteria with zero- tension cutoff are considered as yield criteria for concrete. Two collapse modes are studied: flexure and shear mechanism and diagonal splitting mechanism. The critical mechanism of failure is influenced by the arrangement of reinforcement and shear span-to-depth ratio. Comparisons between the loads and modes of failure obtained from the present analysis and those from experiments for 17 test beams show good agreement. The relative effectiveness of the horizontal and vertical web reinforcement on the capacity is mainly influenced by the shear span-to-depth ratio. The deeper the beam, the more effective the horizontal web reinforcement and the less effective the vertical web reinforcement.
