Abstract:
This article deals with a serious resonance/vibration problem in the massive and deep foundation of a gas compressor station, where an explosion hazard eliminated conventional solutions. Vibration measurements indicated that the existing foundation system was experiencing continuous resonance about the foundation's vertical axis. Finite element analysis considering soil-foundation interaction revealed that the foundation was very poor in providing adequate torsional stiffness. Three different alternative measures were proposed and analyzed. After rigorous analysis, it was concluded that construction of four vertical caissons coupled with four large horizontal girders rigidly connected to the existing mat, was the most appropriate modification that would provide adequate lateral and torsional stiffness.
