Abstract:
The Citytunneln project in Malmö, Sweden, will be a vital hub in the Swedish railway system. Its two parallel 6 km (3.7 mile) long tunnels and two underground stations will connect it to Denmark via the Öresund Link. It’s essential to avoid traffic disturbance for maintenance or repair during the 120 year design service life of the project. To achieve such a long service life cost effectively, the design-build contracts specifically focus on concrete durability and resistance issues in a way that leaves the contractors reasonable freedom to choose methods that meet the client’s requirements on water tightness as well as resistance to fire, reinforcement corrosion, and cycles of freezing and thawing.
