Abstract:
The aim of this study is to examine the effects of molecular and electrokinetic properties of clinoptilolite (CBC), diatomite (DBC), fly ash (FBC), and slag (SBC) on the progress of hydration. According to test results, clinker has positive zeta (+?) potential and a gypsum blend makes it negative. Zeta (?) potentials of pozzolans take negative values depending on the amount of OH groups. Hydrophilic and hydrophobic characteristics develop with increases and decreases in OH groups, respectively. While hydrophilic characteristics especially determine water demand and setting time of pastes, hydrophobic characteristics affect early strength of mortars. The hydration rate of cyclic Si-O-Si, one of the molecule groups, is higher than that of chain Si-O-Si. Furthermore, the study results suggest that there is a significant relationship between electrokinetic characteristics and strength improvement, and ? potential may play a role in the formation of surface morphology of cement-pozzolan interactions at the onset of hydration.
