Abstract:
Because nearly 2.77 billion tonne (3.05 billion ton) of cement was produced in 2007 and enormous amounts of water and aggregates were consumed in the production of concrete, the concrete construction sector has a responsibility to take immediate action to reduce its environmental impacts, including the generation of CO2. The concrete industry shouldn’t consider this obligation a negative, however, because this responsibility also brings the opportunity to develop innovative technologies. In light of this background, a sustainable development workshop on concrete, green building, and international standards was held at the ACI Fall 2008 Convention in St. Louis, MO. Current and developing standards and rating systems that will affect the concrete industry, as well as other topics discussed at the workshop, are summarized.
