Abstract:
I’m designing a reinforced concrete framed building that will house a variety of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) imaging equipment on the ground floor. Because the imaging equipment is very sensitive to ferrous steel, we intend to design the adjacent columns using nonmagnetic stainless steel for vertical bars and ties. The bars in the columns above will be carbon steel. What measures should we take to prevent galvanic action due to dissimilar metals between the stainless and carbon steel bars? We envision conventional lap splices for the vertical bars. Would it be adequate to simply require epoxy-coated bars for the first run of column bars above the stainless steel?
