Abstract:
While many innovative solutions are emerging to address concrete’s carbon footprint, very few can result in a truly net zero concrete. In contrast, incorporating biochar as a partial cement replacement can result in a carbon-negative mortar with similar or improved strength compared to a control. Since not all biochar performs equally well, to ensure reliable performance in concrete it is necessary to understand and control the mechanisms for strength improvement in biochar cement composites. This talk will discuss how biochar contributes to strength improvements via the filler effect, internal curing, hydration/pozzolanic reactions, and carbonate formation.
