Abstract:
The effect of cracks on the durability and service life of concrete structures is subject to constant debate. Since cracking of concrete elements is a concern for the long-term performance of the structure, accounting for the effect of cracking on service life predictions is necessary. In practice, the causes, characteristics, and impact of cracking on concrete durability and service life can result in a wide range of predictions. Incorporating cracking in probabilistic service life predictions is a useful tool for estimating the effect of cracking, identifying repair strategies, and conflict resolution. This presentation will cover the basis of probabilistic service life modeling, propose different ways in which the effect of cracking can be adopted in this type of prediction, and provide examples of its application.
