Abstract:
There is much discussion among pool designers about what ACI design code, if any, should apply to pools. The International Swimming Pool and Spa code has no clear guidance on concrete pool shell design. The pool industry is unregulated in many states, and where some states require sealed drawings, many engineers use ACI 318. However, ACI 318 focuses on building structures, not watertight pool shells. Some engineers, especially in larger commercial pools, use ACI 350, but it is complex and covers much more complicated tanks. This presentation will discuss the current state of the pool design market, present the existing design "options" and then explain why the pool industry needs a specific code tailored for pool design to raise the quality, serviceability and durability of concrete pools.
