Abstract:
Many first-year engineering students want to save the world, but as new students without technical backgrounds, they struggle to realize those goals. In the-first year, introductory course, we have developed a semester-long project where students study the feasibility of proposed solutions to campus problems. During the project, students develop skills related to technical communication, teamwork, basic research skills, and data presentation. The project culminates in a public presentation where campus facilities staff and alumni are in the audience. This format has shown to provide an engaging experience for the student and the campus has even worked with the student to implement a few of their projects.
