Abstract:
With the increased use of alternative cements, the compatibility of their chemistry with admixtures, such as grinding aids, retarders and accelerators, is of relevance for efficient use in terms of workability, strength, and dimensional stability. This research explores the effects of utilizing alkanolamines (triisopropanolamine (TIPA), triethanolamine (TEA), and diisopropanolamine (DIPA)) as admixtures on the hydration of calcium sulfoaluminate belite (CSAB) cement. Several analytical techniques were utilized including isothermal calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, amplitude-sweep rheometry, in-situ X-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy. Work is ongoing to characterize the physio-chemical interaction mechanism of these alkanolamines on CSAB cement. This can provide a broad foundation for utilizing these admixtures to optimize the microstructure, mechanical properties, and durability of low CO2 alternative cements.
