Abstract:
Assessing pitting corrosion resistance of stainless steel (SS) rebar alloys requires non-destructive tools such as Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number (PREN) index to prevent the time- and resource-intensive electrochemical assessments. By addressing the limitations of the current PREN index, initially designed for SS alloys in high-temperature acidic or neutral environments, this study develops a practical PREN index tailored for highly alkaline ambient-temperature concrete environments, using existing literature data on SS, new electrochemical analysis, and modelling. This comprehensive approach accounts for variations in SS alloying composition and concrete mixes, meeting the growing demand for cost-effective corrosion-resistant SS grades.
