Abstract:
Concrete domes have been used for centuries to provide free-span cover over large circular footprints. Thin-shell reinforced concrete domes have been used since the early 1900s. The basic design is straight-forward and has been refined by modern analysis techniques, forming techniques and concrete placement. We will focus a bit on the history of concrete domes and explore the various options for current dome construction. Then we will detail how concrete domes allow maximum spans with minimum concrete, and have distinct sustainability benefits.
