Abstract:
Nontraditional pozzolans (NPs) are emerging as viable alternatives to traditional supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs). While previous studies have demonstrated adequate performance of NPs when cured under lab conditions, limited research exists on real-world applications. This presentation discusses the mechanical and durability properties of ready-mixed concretes (used to prepare 8’x8’x10” slabs) cured under lab and field conditions. Concretes utilized Class F fly ash and three different NPs. The NPs used included low-purity calcined clay (CC2), and two volcanic ashes (VA2, and VA3). Cast and cored concrete specimens were tested for mechanical properties (compressive, tensile, and flexural strength) and durability-related properties (rate of water absorption, formation factor, chloride penetration depth, and scaling resistance). The results indicate that concrete containing NPs performed comparably or better than mixtures containing fly ash and similarly to reference (plain) concrete, suggesting that NPs are promising alternatives for future applications.
