Abstract:
New venues for referencing standards place new demands for industry engagement. There is a need for volunteers to work with the staff of ACI and the member organizations of Alliance for Concrete Codes and Standards to adequately have a presence and effectively participate in the expanding venues for referencing ACI codes and standards and related industry proposals in building codes and other rules and regulations. Initially, the ACI standards developed were primarily applicable only in the commercial building codes. The scope of ACI standards development continues to expand and now referenced standards are in the codes for residential and existing buildings. New standards are being developed that will apply to swimming buildings, energy conservation, and green construction. More standardization is being required to satisfy the needs of rule, regulations, and ordinances outside the purview of the general building codes. If the need for new standards addressing concrete design and construction is not developed by entities with in-depth concrete expertise, they will be developed by others.
