Abstract:
Development of regulations in state and local codes and government agencies; and the role of standards – successes and challenges. Referencing ACI standards typically involves the model building code process. To be successful at getting references in the model building codes often requires early adoption by state and local authorities to demonstrate that the provisions are beneficial and enforceable with regard to safeguarding the public. To be effective at the state and local level requires the involvement of constituents in the jurisdiction. Described, are how this works, the need for volunteers and leadership and the resources ACI offers to support code advocacy and outreach efforts. There are also venues for adoption of standards in federal and state rules and regulations and local ordinances outside the purview of the building codes.
