Abstract:
There are multiple steps to for concepts to evolve into building code requirements. The evolutionary steps of getting an idea into a rule or regulation focuses on the model code development process in the United States - which serves as the basis for most state and local building codes. The process is often challenging and time consuming. Effective engagement and volunteerism facilitate the process to best ensure that provisions in referenced standards and codes appropriately safeguard the public and emergency responders. Provided are typical timelines and scenarios for developing standards, referencing the standards in model codes and ultimately having the state and local codes based on current model codes and implemented.
