Abstract:
This study investigates sugarcane bagasse ash (SCBA) as a supplementary cementitious material, specifically under high temperature weather. It is known that curing temperatures above 40°C results in lower long-term compressive strength of cementitious composites than under standard conditions. This phenomenon is known as the crossover effect. To assess the effect of SCBA on the crossover effect, mortar with 0%, 10%, and 20% SCBA replacement of cement, cured at 21°C and 45°C were tested. Compressive strength tests and thermogravimetric analyses were performed. While reference mortars showed an important crossover effect at 45°C (reduction of 26% compared to 21°C), mortars with SCBA did not show a significant crossover effect. The Calcium Hydroxide-to-Total Hydration Products ratio is lower when the curing temperature is 45°C versus 21°C in samples with SCBA while it is higher for reference mortar, which may explain the observed mitigation of the crossover effect due to the use SCBA.
