Abstract:
Inadequate roadway geometrics and wear of surface texture increase the risk of crashes. High friction surface treatments (HFST) are a proven mitigation tool, but the high cost of epoxies limits their use. HFST binders require superior bond strength to prevent failure along the substrate-binder interface or the loss of surface aggregate. This study investigated the development of an ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) based solution to provide high bond strength and adhesion at a lower cost. Testing investigated application methods, including vibration-based aggregate embedment and surface retarding. UHPC-based surfaces produced statistically comparable friction and texture to epoxy-based surfaces. Mix design considerations resulted in superior bond strength and adhesion, making it a potential alternative to epoxies for HFST applications. However, those considerations also led to a decrease in compressive strength. Ongoing and future work will evaluate the dynamic friction of UHPC-based friction treatments and shrinkage.
