Abstract:
Despite the thermoregulation capability of the PCM-containing concretes and their corresponding potential in mitigating urban overheating, the allowable PCM content in concrete is restricted because of proportional loss in mechanical strength. Without further improvement in the strength of PCM concretes, the benefits of PCM concretes to improve thermal performance in urban environments are limited. In this study, the mix design of PCM concrete is altered through different additives while keeping the volumetric content of PCM constant. The main objective is to quantify the binder improvement through the strength and fracture properties while maintaining the PCM concrete’s thermal performance. Laboratory results showed certain additives were able to maintain hardened properties that would enable their application in concrete pavements and other horizontal surfaces to mitigate urban heat island effects.
