Abstract:
In the case of 3D printing of cementitious materials, there is a big challenge in converting the material from a flowable and pumpable material to a non-supported layered materials with high buildability. The time frame to achieve this conversion is quite short and is mainly related to the extrusion phase when the material is going through the nozzle. In a ground-breaking approach Active Stiffening Control (ASC) of cementitious materials could provide solutions to these challenges, e.g., by a magnetic control of magnetizable nanoparticles (MNP) incorporated into the cementitious materials. The cementitious material can show features of magneto-rheological fluids (MRF) in this way. The fundamental background of active rheology control based on MRF-technology applied to cementitious materials is introduced and proof-of-concept laboratory results are reported. Further application of the developed concept to the situation of 3D-printing of cementitious materials will be outlined.
