Abstract:
The Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts at Harvard University, completed in 1963, is the only building in North America designed by one of the greatest architects of the twentieth century, the Swiss French architect Charles-Édouard Jeanneret (aka "Le Corbusier"). As such, it is one of America's most significant concrete buildings, and a unique American embodiment of Le Corbusier's design ideals and revolutionary "Five Points of Architecture." In this presentation, Matthew Bronski P.E., who recently completed a comprehensive enclosure assessment of the building, will describe its rich history, significant aspects of its design, and some of its technical challenges.
