Abstract:
The concrete breakout strength or pryout strength of anchors installed in existing bridges is sometimes not enough to resist the shear by the seismic load which has recently increased. However, a lot dead load is applied to the anchors due to the super structures of bridge such as deck, girder, and so on. Even under earthquake, the dead load is applied to the anchors. From the literature review, it was found that no experimental study has been conducted on the anchors under compression and shear up to now, and the design provisions of USA and Europe do not include the favorable effects of the compression for conservative design. The effects of dead loads on the anchors strength under shear were investigated by experiments. All specimens failed due to concrete breakout showed same crack patterns regardless the amount of dead load. As the dead load increased, the concrete breakout strength increased. Test results showed that under a certain dead load, the pryout failure did not occur, and the concrete breakout strengths increased by 0.6 times dead load with the upper limit of increased strength of 1.6 times the original concrete breakout strength based on the design code provisions.
