Abstract:
Previous studies highlighted that the appropriate amount and type of fiber usage can reduce the construction material related carbon emission of concrete structures by reducing the structural dimensions owing to the improved mechanical performance. Besides, several researchers emphasized the importance of fiber-matrix interface in terms of the overall benefit that can be obtained from the fibers. Accordingly, two-stage mixing approach (TSMA), commonly used to improve the interface between recycled aggregates and cementitious matrix, was employed in this study to enhance the fiber-concrete matrix interface. To assess the effectiveness of the approach, a case study for a concrete pavement was conducted, along with mechanical tests and microstructural analyses. The results demonstrated that the use of TSMA can be a promising approach to enhance the mechanical performance of fiber-reinforced concrete and to reduce the structural dimensions and environmental impact of concrete structures as a result.
