Abstract:
CSA cements are promising alternatives to OPC given their lower carbon footprint as well as unique properties ranging from shrinkage-compensation to rapid strength development. Their anhydrous phase assemblage is quite different from that of OPC, as they are rich in phases such as ye’elimite, belite, and various calcium sulfates. Accurate quantification of these phases and their respective polymorphs is the key to understanding and predicting their performance. X-ray diffraction (XRD) Rietveld analysis is the most relevant tool for this problem; however, peak overlap and preferred orientation may induce some uncertainty in the quantification. In this talk, I’ll report our initial efforts to employ Raman imaging for anhydrous phase quantification in these systems. Briefly, we’ll learn about the associated benefits and challenges, and most importantly, how Raman imaging and XRD can be highly complementary tools for phase quantification.
