Abstract:
The current design provisions in ACI 318 for development length in tension are based on limited tests with concrete compressive strengths up to 7.9 ksi and bar stresses up to 115 ksi. ACI 318 has therefore limited the compressive strength of concrete to 10 ksi when calculating development length. This research studies the development/splice length as a function of concrete strength, bar size and spacing, and confinement for high-strength reinforcing bars in high-strength concrete. The study includes 38 beam specimens with lap splices in a constant moment region with concrete strength ranging from 12 ksi to 16 ksi and bar stress ranging from 90 ksi to 140 ksi. The test results are compared with design equations in ACI 318-19 and the descriptive equation of ACI 408R-03. ACI 318-19 overpredicted the bar stresses for three specimens, and ACI 408R-03 overpredicted bar stresses for 23 of 25 specimens tested to date.
