Abstract:
This research investigates the performance and durability of high early strength binders that will reduce closure time for strucutral bridge deck overlays. Materials being used are calcium sulfoaluminate (CSA) and accelerated portland cement (PC) systems that achieve a target strength of at least 3000 psi at 3 and 6 hours respectively. Strength curves were developed for 3, 6, and 24-hours, and 28 days. Additional testing includes coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE), bond strength to substrate, freeze-thaw durability, and critical chloride threshold with results being compared to a standard high-performance concrete (HPC). Three of the CSA concretes contain a permeability reducing admixtures in hopes to address issues with chloride penetration that is common in CSA concretes, and we hypothesize that with these modifiers a target air content of 6 percent for freeze-thaw durability may not be required as it is in OPC concretes.
