Abstract:
Concrete barriers are used for different purposes in the highway inventory. An important purpose is the use of concrete barriers to absorb the collision energy and/or redirect the vehicle away from the piers being protected. Accurate estimation of the capacity of concrete barriers during a crash event is an important consideration. AASHTO applies the yield line analysis to predict the barrier's capacity without considering the reinforcement, which is very conservative. This work presents a comprehensive yield line analysis to obtain the capacity of concrete barriers by eliminating key simplifying assumptions. Also, a model to incorporate the effects of inclined angle of attack is proposed. The present results will help structural engineers in the highway industry to find detailed guidance on how to accurately estimate the capacity of concrete barriers using yield line analysis. It will enable applying the impact load at inclined angles of attack to represent realistic crash scenarios.
