Abstract:
As sustainability is emerging as a topic of interest across the board, there is an urgent need to expedite the associated education. For over a decade, Sustainable Pavements Program in FHWA served as a hub to advance and propel the knowledge of sustainability in infrastructure through stakeholder engagement, education, and development of relevant tools and resources. This presentation summarizes the lessons learned from the Sustainable Pavements Program's efforts to create a community of practice through research, webinars, courses, an ambassador’s program, and other initiatives. These efforts resulted in multiple recognitions and successful projects, including the nationally recognized Climate Challenge initiative, major policy developments, and the advancement of the sustainability goals of the Biden-Harris Administration. Stakeholder education played a key role in these initiatives and is therefore highlighted in this presentation such that the lessons can be transferred into other domains.
