Abstract:
Innovation and new product development in large companies typically follows a Stage - Gate development protocol. Such processes provide excellent assurance that checks and balances are obtained throughout the development cycle and that various stakeholders compare the project goals and progress at defined points to ensure the best results are obtained ath the conclusion of the process. While Stage - Gate protocols offer a good framework for collecting relevant project data and achieving the agreed-upon milestones, innovative ideas and solutions often require a flexibility and iterative approach that does not nicely fit within a Stage - Gate framework. This presentation highlights the iterative nature of development that requires a focused and tailored approach to solving a need. By collaborating with experts, a novel underwater cementitious grout was developed to solve a massive construction problem in Latin America. We hope the successes shared in this presentation might serve as a template for increased innovation in the construction industry.
