Abstract:
Current concrete mixture proportioning procedures do not capture many benefits of coal combustion products (CCP) and fails to produce concrete that is optimized for application-specific performance criteria such as low permeability, corrosion resistance, freeze-thaw-resistance, or resistance to salt damage. Furthermore, many existing material specifications are out of date and exclude the use of viable CCPs in concrete. These issues are addressed by a new mixture proportioning approach which is based on thermodynamic predictions of the key properties of concrete using readily available or easily measurable properties of constituent materials such as chemical composition and reactivity. In this presentation, the new mixture portioning approach and example applications of the method will be presented with specific focus on concrete containing CCPs.
