Abstract:
Several service life models predicting the initiation of corrosion due to chloride ingress are commercially available. These include Life 365™, STADIUM®, and DuraCrete/DARTS (fib Bulletin 34). Other programs are used that work on similar principles. Life 365 and DuraCrete/DARTS are based on Ficks’ Second Law of Diffusion, whereas STADIUM is based on transport equation for a non-saturated concrete with the chemical reactions that occur in the concrete over time, with ions from the environment. The three programs above have different approaches to determining their input parameters. In this presentation, these and other models will be reviewed along with the test methods or empirical means of determining the input parameters. How to use these programs to determine the probability of corrosion initiation is addressed. In addition, methods to address how cracking can be incorporated are highlighted.
