Abstract:
The Marquette Interchange, a highway system since the 1960s, was replaced with new structures and roadways. The interchange of I-94, I-794 and I-43 is the cornerstone of the southeastern Wisconsin freeway system. The $810 million project included a 5-level system interchange, 5 miles of interstate, 28 ramps, 56 bridges totaling 2.1 million square feet of bridge deck and 5 miles of retaining wall. Construction was phased so that traffic can flow through the interchange throughout the entire four-year reconstruction process. Extensive mitigation and public information campaigns were carried out to provide transportation choices and inform motorists of available routes during construction. HNTB, as part of Marquette Transportation Partners, designed the Marquette Interchange Reconstruction. The project was successfully delivered on time and to client satisfaction. During a routine, mandatory bi-annual inspection, it was observed by the inspectors that there were what seemed to be issues with the behavior of one single pier out of 199, Pier TS7. Extensive, unexpected cracking was appearing in the concrete pier cap. Tony will provide an overview of the project, the problems encountered with Pier TS7 and an overview of the investigation, navigating through the most appropriate solution and the reconstruction process.
