Abstract:
Embed plates anchored with welded deformed reinforcing bars are commonly used for attachments in industrial facilities. These connections may experience significant tension and/or shear. The required embedment of welded bars is typically determined based on development length concepts, with the assumption that the nominal tensile capacity of the connection can be taken as the tension yield strength of the bars. However, breakout failure or group anchorage may govern the strength of embedment. This paper presents results of large-scale experimental investigations conducted to evaluate the tensile capacity of such embed plates. The experimental investigations were conducted in a coordinated manner in the US (Purdue Univ.), China (Tongji Univ.), and S. Korea. Single anchor pullout tests were also conducted to establish the bond performance of deformed reinforcing bar anchors (DRAs) and deformed wire anchors (DWAs). Preliminary results from the coordinated experimental program will be presented along with strength prediction models including those for bonded anchors.
