Abstract:
A total of 100 concrete panels containing post-tensioning ducts were loaded under pure compression to investigate the influence of duct type and diameter, concrete strength, panel thickness, and reinforcement around the duct, on the compressive capacity of the panels. Results indicated that panels with grouted plastic ducts failed at earlier stages of loading than those with steel ducts due primarily to the poor bond between plastic and concrete. Normalized panel capacity decreased as the duct diameter-to-panel thickness ratio, concrete strength, or panel thickness was increased. Inclusion of reinforcement placed transverse to the splitting cracks that formed near the ducts had a slight influence on behavior. Perhaps most importantly, code-based estimations of panel capacities were found to be both inaccurate and unconservative.
